Who Named Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

According to a Hadith, the Prophet Muhammad was named by his grandfather, Abd al-Muttalib, who hoped that people in the heavens and on earth would praise him. Abd al-Muttalib had a dream.

He saw a silver chain connecting the heavens and the lands, eventually turning into a tree with radiant leaves that people held onto. A young lad in the dream protected the tree. Abd al-Muttalib couldn’t reach the tree, but he was told he’d have a share in it through his descendants. This dream led him to name his grandson Muhammad.

Prophet’s mother, Amina, heard a voice informing her that she had given birth to the leader of his nation and should name him Muhammad. She shared this with Abd al-Muttalib, confirming his choice.

Before the Prophet’s birth, there was no one with the name Muhammad. Some other boys had name of Muhammad in anticipation of a prophet’s arrival, but none claimed prophethood except Muhammad ibn Adi, who accepted Islam from the Prophet.

In various regions, people use different honorific titles to refer to the Prophet, such as “Hazrat” in central and south Asian countries like Pakistan and Turkey, and “Sayyiduna” in other parts of the Muslim world.
